Grading Periods

Grading periods will be nine weeks in length. Nine-weeks letter grades will be reported to students, parents, and to home school guidance counselors. Semester letter grades will be reported to the home school guidance counselors and to New River Community College (NRCC) or Radford University (RU) at the end of each semester according to the Governor's School calendar. Only semester grades will appear on a student's NRCC or RU transcript.

Students are responsible for having NRCC or RU forward transcripts to a college of their choice.

Grading Scale

All reporting of academic progress, including grades for report cards and transcripts, for Southwest Virginia Governor's School students will be recorded as letter grades according to the following scale:

Grading Scale
A 90-100 Superior performance in mastering content
B 80-89 Above average performance
C 70-79 Average performance
D 60-69 Performance is below average
F 59 or below Failure to demonstrate mastery
Instructors may also assign plus and minus grades as designated on course syllabi.

Calculation of Semester Grades

Semester grades are calculated using an established scale from letter grades for each of the two nine week grading periods and the cumulative semester exam. Each nine week letter grade is valued at 40% and the semester exam is valued at 20%. Only semester grades are reported to New River Community College and Radford University.

Calculation of Year Grades

For high school transcripts, year grades are calculated using an established scale. Letter grades for the first and second semesters are each valued at 50%.
